The Elder Dachshund Page - The Saga of Peanut & Sammy

Dachshund Definition -- German for little short legged pain in the ass.

Peanut (14 years old) and Sammy (12 years old) were rescued in March 2009 by Dachshund Rescue of North America (www.drna.org). They were adopted in July 2009. When rescued they were very overweight but since have lost enough so Peanut is at his fighting weight. Sammy with his short legs had his tummy dragging on the ground. There is now an inch or so clearance. He has a couple of pounds to go but is much more active. They walk us about 3/4 to a mile twice a day and even Grampa is losing pounds -26 pounds - not to mention the cardio benefits. Pictures will be placed on this page as they are taken.

August 6, 2009, the boyz have just finished a mile at breakneck speed (for doxies). They ran most of the way out and back. That is Peanut on the left and Sammy on the right. They have adopted my Mom's afghan as theirs.

October 14, 2009, the boyz are assuming their favorite positions-after all it's raining outside and it soooo much warmer and drier on the recliner. Both are achieving their boyish figures along with me.

December 19th, 2009, it is snowing and some of the bowl games are over. I thought I would join the boyz in their favorite positions. Even with the camera action Peanut can hardly keep his eyes open.

February 16, 2010, it has been snowing for 3 straight days and Peanut has put his sweater on so he can do his business -- under the trailer. Now to hurry back to assume the favorite position.

September 18, 2010. Been a tough day chasing butterflies, riding in the truck and just plain being doxies. Time for some doxie dreams.

The time is evening, December 13, 2010. The place - my seat in the sofa/recliner.  The boyz have dragged the Snuggie over to where I sit so they can await my watching the Monday night football game, which isn't going to happen. The time is about 9:00 PM (CST). It has been snowing for two days and the total snowfall has reached 12+ inches in places. The temperature is a balmy 14 heading down to a low of 6, without the wind chill which has reached -10 during the previous night and early morning. The boyz have been outside for what will be the last time before they get their treat and retire to the crate to dream Doxie dreams. Peanut is trying to make believe he is still asleep while his curiosity makes his eyes open ever so slightly. Sammy is out cold and is snoring like a log truck going uphill. Soon they will be cuddled up in their own bed for the night. But for now, the evil curmudgeon has gotten the camera out and has captured this moment for all eternity.

April 15, 2011- No pictures with this event but Peanut has undergone surgery this morning. He is riddles with stitches.
They removed numerous tumors, growths, might have gotten some of his sweetness too. The growth on his front leg was marble sized and may be cancerous. It has been sent off for a biopsy.

Update: April 18, 2011 and the boyz have been retrieved from the vets. Sammy bit the nurse when she tried to remove him from the traveling crate because he wouldn't eat all weekend. They are glad to see me.

April 28, 2011 and Peanut had the stitches removed from his leg. They are leaving the others in until May 2nd to be sure everything has healed. The biopsy came back negative but they didn't get everything. Since the remaining tumor tissue is very slow growing no additional surgery will be needed unless it grows back and causes discomfort. It will take several years to get back to any size so it is better to leave him a happy, sleepy pup. (Picture above taken on May 17, 2011 after all stitches removed and everyone is getting back to normal.)

May 17, 2011 - life is certainly normal (almost) as Peanut keeps my armpit warm. Sammy is down by my feet snoring up a storm. Nothing ever changes for the men of the household. They are forever napping.
